Chicken Fried Steak Contest with Foodie & The Beast and Black Jack



WHAT: From event organizers:
"Chef/Owners of Black Restaurant Group, Barbara and Jeff Black, have teamed up with Nycci and David Nellis of the popular Foodie & The Beast radio show to host a Chicken Fried Steak showdown at Black Jack during a live tapping on Sunday, May 6th.

Tickets are priced at $35 per person (exclusive of tax and gratuity), and includes the live viewing of Foodie & The Beast, an hour-long variety show on 1500 AM hosted by Nycci and David Nellis; complimentary food provided by Pearl Dive Oyster Palace and Black Jack and a cash bar.

Diners can expect a variety of dishes off Pearl Dive’s brunch menu including Eggs Pontchartrain, Gulf Coast Po’Boys, Chicken Fried Steak and Assorted Pastries. At 11:45 AM, guests will also have the chance to see Chef/Owner Jeff Black throw down the gauntlet to create the best chicken fried steak against some of Washington’s leading chefs: Victor Albisu (formally of BLT Steak), Kyle Bailey of Birch & Barley, Scott Drewno of The Source and Adam Sobel of BOURBON STEAK. Known as pan-fried steak or country-fried steak, chicken fried steak is a staple of the South and consists of tenderized cube steak coated with seasoned flour and pan-fried. At 1 PM, judging will be lead by some of Washingtonian’s top foodies including David Hagedorn of The Washington Post/Washington Flyer, Tim Carman of The Washington Post and Jeff Dufour of Urban Daddy.

Additionally, Ari and Micah Wilder, the mixologists for Pearl Dive Oyster Palace and Black Jack, will create a craft cocktail, which will be complimentary for those who attend the radio taping."

WHY: Proceeds from the event will help meet their fundraising goal of $200,000 to build a state-of-the-art kitchen at the Washington Nationals Diabetes Care Complex at Children’s National Medical Center to support children with diabetes. The new facility is the vision of Dr. Fran Cogen, MD, named one of the "Best Doctors in America” and known for her dedication to advocating for the needs of patients and their families in managing diabetes.

Children’s National Medical Center in partnership with the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation is building the new Washington Nationals Diabetes Care Complex on the first floor of the hospital. The new complex will provide expanded state-of-the-art, family-centered, and personalized diabetes care to children in the Washington Region and beyond.
