Spots for weekday breakfast?

Blue Duck Tavern serves breakfast all week.

Q:
I know some great places in DC to get brunch on the weekends, but what about breakfast during the week? I'd like to treat myself, and all I know of are hotel restaurants. Any ideas? - Amy

Amanda says:
I know you're looking for places beyond hotel restaurants, but my top pick for weekday breakfast would be Blue Duck Tavern. (Sure it's in the gorgeous Park Hyatt, but its soul is a real DC restaurant.) Chef Brian McBride is a huge supporter of local farms, meaning you can get a plate of Amish eggs with Pennsylvania scrapple, oatmeal-crusted Shenandoah trout and great seasonal fruit.

You could also go for a Southern style breakfast like Creole grillades and grits at Johnny's Half Shell on Capitol Hill, or try the extensive menu (including fresh doughnuts!) at Founding Farmers.

And I'm sneaking one more hotel past you to recommend The Tabard Inn's restaurant, with breakfast dishes like eggs over grits with pork belly confit, brioche French toast and housemade granola.

For more casual options, I'd opt for a stack of hot cakes at good ol' Ben's Chili Bowl and, serving breakfast all day, The Diner in Adams Morgan or the one-of-a-kind Jimmy T's on Capitol Hill.

Weekday breakfast picks:
Blue Duck Tavern, breakfast served Mon.-Fri. 6:30-10:30 a.m.
Johnny's Half Shell, breakfast Mon.-Fri. 7-9:30 a.m.
Founding Farmers, breakfast Mon.-Fri. 8-11 a.m.
The Tabard Inn, breakfast Mon.-Fri. 7-10 a.m.
Ben's Chili Bowl, Mon.-Fri. 6-10:45 a.m.
The Diner, 24 hours
Jimmy T's, Tues.-Fri. 6:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
